Part II: EGBChapter 10

Levels of Description, and Computer Systems

Hardware vs Software. The hierarchy of abstraction.

You can describe a computer as a collection of electrons moving through silicon (Hardware), or as a machine running a spreadsheet program (Software). Both are true, but they exist at different 'Levels of Description'. This chapter explores how high-level meaning (like 'I am happy') emerges from low-level substrate (neurons firing), and why we can't understand the mind by only looking at the brain.
